The Bird’s Nest

Sometimes I get restless, especially after a long cold spell or a week being drenched by “atmospheric rivers” (i.e. heavy rain). There’s nothing like taking a drive without having a destination or appointment at the end of it. Or visiting a favorite shop and drinking in the colors, textures, and variety of items on display.

My favorite shop in Santa Rosa is The Bird’s Nest. A dear friend, Linda Cargile (wife of Barney of “Barney’s Bullets”) was the original owner. Jan Cheek has taken it over and kept the subtle Christian vibe and colorful feast of the senses. The store isn’t laid out in aisles, but has a meandering path through a treasure trove, with separate alcoves of green, red, blue, black and white, and turquoise; combinations of new and gently used clothing, antiques, jewelry, and a thousand other tempting items to add ambiance to you home or gift to others.

I spotted a gorgeous set of antique gold and white dishes that I knew a collector friend would love. I texted her with pictures. Her husband raced down and that set now blesses her home and visitors she serves. I found a stone inlaid globe once – ah, something I know our son will love. $60 sure beats $300-500 – the usual price range online or in a specialty store.

Every so often, I bring in a flat of signed books. Redeeming Love was a good one for Valentine’s Day. It’s nice to mingle reading materials with all those caches.

The Bird’s Nest isn’t just a place where things are sold. It’s a place to chat, barter and bless others. When patrons bring in consignment items, they can designate the money to be used by others —

high school girl in need of a prom dress she can’t afford… a woman needing a nice outfit for a job interview…

If you want to save money, help others and have fun doing both, look for a store like The Bird’s Nest in your area. And spread the word.
