Discussion Questions for After-The-Movie Conversations

For those of you who have asked for discussion questions on Redeeming Love, they can be found in the back of the book as well as on my website here: (https://francinerivers.com/books/novels/redeeming-love/#discussion-guide). In addition, Redeeming Love: The Companion Study (https://francinerivers.com/books/devotional/redeeming-love-the-companion-study/) is a detailed, 6-week study perfect for both individual reflection and group discussion, that will draw you deeper into the Biblical truths that inspired the novel.  You can also find out more about the Redeeming Love Sanctuary Foundation and our ongoing mission to aid in preventing sex trafficking and abuse and to support those impacted, by funding survivor support services, education, recovery and prevention programs, by visiting our website: www.redeeminglovesanctuary.org

For the movie, here are a few discussion questions put together by a young friend who viewed the film with her book club:

  1. Did you read the book before seeing the movie or was this your first exposure to the story of Redeeming Love?

  1. If you’d read Redeeming Love, what parts of the story stood out to you differently in the film?

  1. Did you enjoy the cinematography and music? How did they contribute to the storytelling?

  1. Did you find yourself sympathetic to Angel? Did Michael deserve sympathy, too?

  1. Are abused women and children treated differently today than in 1850s Gold Rush-era California?

  1. Sometimes reading an intense scene is different from seeing it on screen. Which scenes did you enjoy seeing played out? Which scenes were hard to watch?

  1. Why did Michael stop rescuing Angel? Why was it important to let her go?

  1. In the book, Duke gets away with his awful deeds, but in the movie, the outcome is different. Do you think movie audiences want certain justices played out whereas readers are more open to an unresolved ending?

  1. The novel Redeeming Love was based on the ancient Bible story of Hosea. What themes in the story are timeless?
