Bread

It takes time for God to make bread from wheat.
He selects the land and plows deep,
turning and enriching the soil.
He plants the seed,
sends down pelting rain,
soft dew,
and warmth from the Son
so that the seed opens and begins to grow,
first as a tiny seedling,
then a thin stalk
to a tall plant that brings forth grain
to be harvested
threshed
winnowed
crushed
ground into flour
mixed with living water
kneaded
shaped
baked in a fiery crucible
then set out to rest
its scent inviting others to breathe in its essence.
A single loaf of bread
full of life-giving nourishment
meant to be shared,
torn and eaten
by the lost and hungry
now found
and ready to be filled
