The Scotch Broom is blooming everywhere.  It spreads like a low thicket over pasturelands.   Even burning doesn’t kill it.  Scotch Broom smells wonderful, but is a problem when left to grow at will.  Tiny seeds blow hither and yon and bring sprouts along roads, backyards, and in the “green space” meant only for native plants.  If the sprout isn’t removed quickly, Scotch Broom will sink its roots and fan underground fingers that hold fiercely. It grows fast and vigorously, blooming like yellow fire across a hillside and casting another ga-zillion tiny seeds into the wind.

How like sin!  It can start with a small thought, take hold, send a mind reeling into action that brings heartache and spreads grief.  Sin can look like the glittering lights of Vegas, smell like the expensive perfume of Paris, taste like a feast.  Then the consequences set in.  The lights go out in the morning, and you see the people sleeping homeless and...

Dog and cats have taught me lessons about faith.

A dog loves unconditionally. A dog will accept discipline and hold no resentment. A dog follows its master and likes to be right at his or her feet.  Our dog, Shabah, was always where we were – sometimes underfoot.  When we went upstairs to bed, he planted himself right in the doorway.  In the morning, he sat on my feet or Rick’s while we did our devotions together.  He was easily trained because he wanted to please us.  If he needed something, he let us know.  “I have to go out.”  “Please..please…please throw the tennis ball.”  “Give me a scratch.”  We could see it in his manner and his “puppy dog look” – and we responded.

I had numerous cats when I was a child, and cats are lovely, but independent.  They don’t need to be with the “master” at all times.  In fact, a cat seems to think it is the master of its own realm, especially if it has a self-dispensing food and...
